 GREEN SWAMP

This is really a section of the river less traveled. We've never seen another kayak while paddling this trip. We’ll be exploring the Withlacoochee River where few paddlers go. If the water level is high enough we may even find the exact start of the Hillsborough River. The Green Swamp section of this river is clear and pristine. It is controlled by SWFTMUD. In a quite short distance the river changes from dirt banks, to swamp, to limestone outcroppings, and then to wide open river lakes. There are interesting plants and birds galore. The last several trips we have found a resident barred owl, sometimes only hearing him.

Downstream is usually blocked by shallow swamp (is 1-2 inches sahllow?) and trees. Last year the upstream section was totally blocked by vegetation. Most of the time, the only access to this section of the river is through a locked gate. Then we drive down a bumpy, rutted dirt road. So you can see that we begin a paddle on a river less traveled by taking a road less traveled. And that is just the beginning of this adventure.
